Sorrento is all set to host the 6th annual "M'Illumino d'inverno", a series of exciting events taking place in the town from 30 November and continuing on throughout the Christmas holidays.
The aim of the programme is to promote Sorrento’s cultural and artistic heritage as well as its top quality wines and food products, stunning scenery, minor arts, religious festivals and local traditions. As last year, the 2012 event will kick off with the lighting of the Christmas tree in piazza Tasso.
The switch-on is scheduled to take place on 28 November, in conjunction with the opening of the 31st Giornate Professionali di Cinema, Italy’s major film industry convention running up to 1 December. For a few days Sorrento will become the country’s movie capital, with a great line-up of screenings previews, special events, conferences, photographic exhibitions and red carpet appearances of Italian and international actors and filmmakers.
From 1 to 20 December the programme will be featuring the Giornate Gastronomiche Sorrentine. A trip down a culinary memory lane, but with an eye on changing traditions, this year the event is showcasing Russian culture and cuisine. Highlights include the award ceremony of the Premio Villa Massa and the gastronomic twinning of the two Italian regions of Campania and Piedmont.
On 30 November, the Museo Correale and the Museobottega della Tarsia will be opening specially all day with guided tours, while from 7 December Suoni Divini will be back with a festival of music, art and food & wine held in the Church and Monastery of San Paolo.
There will be more music from 9 to 30 December with Sorrento Jazz, now in its 22nd year, and a concert by Raphael Gualazzi in piazza Tasso on 29 December. From 1 to 10 January 2012, Sinfonia d'autunno will be brightening up the New Year with shows and street performers.
Christmas cribs will be taking centre stage from 8 December to 8 January in Villa Fiorentino with an exhibition called L'arte presepiale in penisola sorrentina, bringing together miniature masterpieces from private collections and museums.
The 8 December also sees the opening of traditional Christmas markets in Sorrento’s piazza Veniero and the nearby villages of Priora and Casarlano.
On 23 December the acapella band Neri per Caso will be performing live in piazza Tasso.
Piazza Tasso will again be the venue for a pre-New Year’s Eve concert on 30 December called La Stella di Natale, headlined by a mystery big name from the world of Italian light music.
Celebrations will culminate in a spectacular firework display on 31 December in piazza Tasso with the traditional burning of a (fake!) donkey and lots of music.
